Use Holistic Medicine to Keep Healthy

Eastern traditional alternative medicine is also called
holistic medicine. This form of medical treatment is not
accepted by many people in Western nations, particularly
the United States, but its purpose is to treat the whole
person, instead of just today's physical ailment.
Contemporary medicine is a way of treating the physical
without attending to the emotional and spiritual, and that
is where holistic medicine is different.
Most people who believe in holistic treatments for their
medical ailments do not use any drugs or surgery to help
them feel better. Instead, they may rely on natural
remedies, such as herbs, or on non-medicinal ideas like
prayer and meditation.
Some practitioners of holistic medicine use conventional
ideas to help diagnose physical problems. They just add in
some non-conventional ideas. These can range from medical
massage to accupuncture to biofeedback techniques. They
also push yoga and folk medicine remedies to help improve
their patients. Another different with American medicine is
that the folks who practice holistic medicine actually
encourage their patients to take an active role in their
healing. To do this, they usually talk to patients about
how to improve their overall health through better living,
such as quitting smoking and eating healthier.
Holistic medicine has been credited with helping many
people solve their medical problems. It can help people
with minor or major problems, but you should beware. Some
research of late suggests that while holistic medicine can
be helpful, some people with major illnesses, such as
cancer or Hepatitis B, can be hurt by using only
chiroprators or acupuncturists instead of seeing a licensed
physicians. Aromatherapy is an important type of holistic
medicine, but this, too, can cause unwanted side effects,
such as allergic reaction.
At least one person with pneumonia who only saw holistic
medical providers died. Other people could have asthma or
cancer or other illnesses that go undiagnosed because the
patient does not see someone with the ability to spot these
illnesses. Many of the people who use holistic medicine
cannot afford a regular doctor, however.
One of the issues that people seeking holistic cures should
be aware of is that "natural" does not mean it will work.
These cures are based on a belief system and centuries of
experience, but they are definitely not cure alls.
Furthermore, the patient must believe in the cures because
much of holistic medicine is based on the idea that one can
overcome physical ailments with the power of the mind. That
can cause problems for patients who do not understand the
point of holistic remedies.
Many traditional doctors work from hospitals or offices,
and they may see hundreds or even thousands of patients
every year. That is one area where physicians differ from
holistic practitioners. These people see very few patients
because they give each one much more attention. They often
work from their homes or in very small offices. These
practitioners concern themselves with the whole self of the
patient, including his or her religious and cultural
practices. These are parts of your life that a normal
doctor will not ask about.
Diabetics can see holistic providers. Most diabetics see
endocrinologists for their diabetes, but these doctors do
not do anything to find out how diabetics feel about their
disease or their personal energy. Traditional doctors view
those topics as unimportant to the work of helping their
patients. They believe only that physical treatments will
make you better. These approaches each have their benefits
but make sure you know enough about each of them before you
decide.
