STUDYING MEDICINE
by Brian Jurning

Getting started in medical school is a challenging but
also highly rewarding decision. You can expect to put in
long hours and have significant work before you can
actually begin to practice medicine but most people will
tell you that once the hard part is over, it was all worth
the time and effort. For the first two years of medical
school, you will study much the same as you would with any
degree, to include anatomy and biology.

During these first few years, the stress level is not very
high. However, you need to remember that these first two
years are very important in that the discipline required
is what will help get you through the tough years to come.
Therefore, you need to establish good study habits, get
plenty of rest, and eat right, exercise, everything just
as you would if preparing for competitive sports.

Once you sail through the first two years, the severe
studies of actual medical subjects begin. From this point
on, try and make sure you show up for every single class
and take accurate notes. This may sound weird but once you
start to slack it becomes almost impossible to keep up.

You also need to make sure that you make every effort to
study incessantly outside of lectures. For exams you need
to make sure that you know every single detail as this
will be expected of you in the questions. If self-study is
not your strong point ask your college to train you as
this is of paramount importance for medical school courses.

If you don~t know what aspects you should be honing in on,
try to obtain previous test questions or materials. If you
can~t find anything up to date, ask your professors as
they will probably be really happy to give you some hints
and tips. At the end of the day they want you to pass
medical school just as much as you do.

Another excellent option is to check out test databases on
line. Many times, the internet is loaded with valuable
information. Simply look for question study guides for
medical school, and you will find a number of excellent
resources. You also want to look at the national board
exam information and spend time studying it. What it
boils down to is that with medical school, you want to
stay ahead of the game and take school serious.

All of this preparation including the long hours and
having to give up lots of your free time pursuits is
getting you ready for saving other human beings so you
should take it really seriously. Don~t forget to keep some
fun too. Ways to achieve this could be finding a study
buddy, enjoying learning and even studying at local parks,
the pool or the beach. This could all help to make you
improve your studying techniques and the amount that you
do.
