Explore the Benefits of Scent in Your Life

Scented candles are now in all the shops and as everyone
appreciates going into a pleasant smelling house, the
concept of improving our homes through these simple, cheap
(relatively) but effective means is one that appeals to
most of us. It has long been proved that the right smells
can influence our thoughts. That's why supermarkets inject
the right smells to make us buy products and why pleasant
smells in a property will make it more appealing if you are
trying to sell. Although this may not be aromatherapy in
the real sense of the word it is still the use of scent for
advantageous purposes.
Aromatherapy is officially defined as the 'breathing in
and/or bodily use of essential oils derived from aromatic
plants to bring about balance, relaxation, restoration and
rejuvenation or to heighten the mind, body and spirit'.
Essential oils are not only taken from flowers but from all
parts of the plants and they stimulate the immune system
and therefore heal the body and mind.
Each person is different and therefore because the
aromatherapy is so sensitive it can work on a person at one
time of the day and then have no effect with that same
person at another time. It is all to do with the mood and
surroundings and the oil that works with one person may
have no effect on the same problem with another but could
help to alleviate a totally different problem that they
have.
The three ways in which aromatherapy can be used are
massage, cosmetic and olfactory (smelling). The essential
oils are all reduced in concentration with either a carrier
oil or water and there are many carrier oils that again may
or may not be suitable for individuals. These simple oils
include sweet almond, olive, rose hip, sesame, sunflower or
avocado.
For the most effective use of essential oils massage
therapy is probably the best option. The body and mind
benefit from the massage by healing hands plus the
essential oils being absorbed right through the skin.
Cosmetic aromatherapy blends the oils with skin and hair
lotions to some, but not great effect and olfactory
aromatherapy brings the oils into the environment by
breathing them in. They are usually placed in a dish over a
candle and the vapours are then inhaled.
The concept of using oils goes back as far as we can trace
history and there are examples of plants and oils used for
ceremonies, medicine or for cosmetic purposes right back to
ancient Egypt. They were actually at the heart of many of
the important trade routes in the world and wars have
literally been fought over them.
The best aromatherapists will ensure that your treatment
is carefully, senstively and correctly managed .
